Parabolic dome reflectors are a fairly efficient type of vertical reflectors. The vertical parabolic dome reflector offers a relatively even light distribution, but throws less overall light than a horizontal reflector. Cone-shaped and other reflectors using a vertical bulb waste much light and are very inefficient. If you try to save money buying a cone shaped reflector (also called a Chinaman Hat) you will soon spend more money on electricity than you saved on the cone hood. When you reach the break even point, you will be stuck with a very inefficient reflective hood and actually lose money for every second the lamp is using electricity! (See Reflector Study)

Make sure that your hood is light-weight so you can hang it from the ceiling or garden bench. Aluminum reflectors are lightweight.

Some reflective hoods dissipate heat better than others. We recommend lightweight reflective hoods with open ends or plenty of vents to dissipate heat. Aluminum dissipates heat quicker than steel. If your reflective hood gets hot and dissipates heat slowly, train a fan on it to carry the heat away. Open ended hoods offer the added air flow directly through the hood and around the bulb. This air flow cools the bulb and the fixture.
